Walking club report

Walking Club Sat Aug 03'08

Flora, Linda, Maria, Rosa, Jose and Virginia met at the Seniors Centre and charted our separate routes to our destination: Rosa and Jose took the Skytrain to the Science Centre at False Creek to wait for our arrival ... the rest of us walked in a zig-zag route to avoid traffic and to enjoy the shade offered by residential trees ...

En route to Science World, we passed Quest Food Exchange at 1217 East Georgia (near Vernon) ... curiosity led us inside where we found a well-stocked store of grocery items ... volunteer cashiers told us the store is operated by Quest Society ... this organization provides groceries at greatly reduced (30% of retail) prices to customers who are receiving welfare benefits or have been referred by a social agency ... a referred card system is maintained for each customer ...

One customer interjected to say that he was very impressed with the variety and quality of food items: fresh fruits and vegetables, frozen meats, dairy, as well as a wide selection of packaged items from pasta to cereals and cookies, crackers, coffee, tea, juice and soft drinks, rice, sauces, spices, canned fruits and vegetables ... unfortunately the cashiers had no business cards or printed information for us to post at Britannia Centre ... they provided us with their phone number and suggested we call during the week when the office staff were available ...

Our walking members met Rosa and Jose at Science World and after a brief rest, we continued our walk along the north shore of False Creek to Edgewater Casino ... there Linda, Jose and Rosa caught the casino shuttle to the stadium Skytrain station to return to Britannia ... Maria opted to return by foot while Flora continued partway with Virginia ...

Virginia continued on her own past beautiful gardens and parks along the seawall under some of the most stunning condo developments and shops in downtown Vancouver ... she rode the Aqua bus to Granville Island for a light lunch and browsed through the market taking in the music and sumptuous array of foods on display ... a refreshing ride on the harbor ferry took her back to Science World and the Main Street Skytrain to return home ...

All seniors are welcome to join our walking group ... for those who prefer a leisurely pace and short destination, you will have companions ... seniors who like a brisker pace and longer walks will find like-minded walkers to keep you company ... rest stops are made when needed ...

Some of our walks start with a bus or Skytrain ride to get us to parks and along waterways where the air and the views are refreshing ... so it's a good idea to bring some change for the fare as well as a hat, water and maybe a light snack ... we meet at 11:00 am at Britannia Seniors Centre on Commercial Drive and Napier behind Sweet Cherubim health food store.
