Golf
Arthur is 90 years old. He's played golf every day
since his retirement 25 years ago. One day he arrives home
looking downcast.
'That's it,' he tells his wife. 'I'm
giving up golf. My eyesight has gotten so bad that once
I've hit the ball I couldn't see where it went.'
His wife sympathizes and makes him a cup of tea. As they
sit down she says, 'Why don't you take my brother
with you and give it one more try.'
'That's no good' sighs Arthur, 'your
brother's a hundred and three. He can't help.'
'He may be a hundred and three', says the wife,
'but his eyesight is perfect.'
So the next day Arthur heads off to the golf course with
his brother-in-law. He tees up, takes an almighty swing and
squints down the fairway.
He turns to the brother-in-law. 'Did you see the
ball?'
'Of course I did!' replied the brother-in-law.
'I have perfect eyesight'.
'Where did it go?' says Arthur.
'I don't remember.'

Jack is our Man!
Jack with his lovely talented wife Irene (knitting club). I wish to thank Jack on behalf of Britannia Al Mattison Lounge for his great work. We started a project of redoing our 6 tables in the centre. They were painted & overtime the paint has worn off & chips in the wood. Well we got them recovered with a hard floor covering & then proceeded to get edging. He did the major work of sanding, gluing, cutting & screwing it all together. He put in a lot of time on this, Vera did help him as well. The tables are awesome. We are so proud of what they look like. I have promised Jack that Thursday lunches are on the house. As well he is in the cycling club. He would put to shame young people with his active lifestyle.

Lion's Den BBQ
Today was the BBQ & we had fun. The building has this lovely large patio with wonderful garden tended by one of the residents. This is her hobby & passion. Roses bushes were in full bloom & lovely scented. We had choice of hot dogs with coleslaw & potato salad. Afterwards we had watermelon & choice of ice cream. We also played several games for a laugh. As well we had Patty Wing entertaining us later with sing along etc.. He played at the Pub Nite.

Walking Club
Linda, Flora, Helga and Virginia met at 10:55 am and planned our route to Stanley Park: #20 Victoria bus south from Commercial Drive and Napier to the Broadway Skytrain Station, skytrain to Main Street Station; from there, the #19 Stanley Park bus took us to the bus terminal near the Vancouver Aquarium ...
From the Aquarium we walked south to the seawall facing Coal Harbour where we had a magnificent view of downtown Vancouver ... we followed the seawall to Totem Park where Linda got a massage to alleviate a muscle spasm in her calf while she carried on a conversation with a small group of visiting Italians ... from Totem Park we continued along the seawall past Vancouver Lookout and the 9 o'clock gun and around Brockton Point Lighthouse ... on the north shore of the park, Linda and Helga caught the next free shuttle bus to town and took the skytrain/bus back to Britannia Center ...
Flora and Virginia continued along the north seawall past a figurehead (bowsprit) from the Japanese ship "The Empress of Japan" which transported Canadian raw materials and goods between 1891 and 1922, including coal, raw lumber, sulphur from Alberta, potash and wheat from Saskatchewan ... on a small rock above the waterline about 10 meters from shore sits the "Woman in Wetsuit", a life size figure of a young woman ... she represents Vancouver's dependence on the sea ... in 1968 she was sculptured in the nude in bronze by Elek Imredy and reminiscent of the Little Mermaid that sits in the harbour of Copenhagen, Denmark ... however, a public outcry against nudity forced our statue into a full wetsuit, goggles and flippers ...

We continued to Lumberman's Arch where we caught the free shuttle around Prospect Point which is still undergoing reconstruction ... the parking lot was unpaved but open to vehicle traffic ...
past Siwash Rock, the Hollow Tree (which will be removed as it was damaged by winter storms two years ago), the shuttle driver reported that black and brown squirrels lived in Stanley Park, as well as raccoons, skunks and coyotes - but no bears, cougars or snakes ... Flora says there are also martens on the cliffs... the road wound past Sequoia Grill Restaurant (where there are no Sequoia trees) to Second Beach where the sun broke through the sketchy clouds ...We got off the shuttle at Second Beach where many colorful tents and canopies were set up ... we could hear East Indian bhajans (songs) being played ... only a handful of people were there and we wondered if the overcast skies were responsible for the poor turnout ... however, when we stopped to sample the "Free Food" we were told it would not be served until 3:30 pm (it was only 2:20 at this point) ... the literature and sign boards indicated this was a Hari Krishna festival ... Hari Krishna devotees follow the Bhagavad Gita, thousand year old scriptures of India ... they profess a spiritual discipline which includes meditation and vegetarian diet ... Festival of India, also known as Harinam Festivals Inc., was originally established in mid 1979.
From Second Beach we walked to English Bay and caught the #6 Downtown bus at Davie and Denman Streets, transferred to the #20 Victoria Drive at Seymour and Robson and arrived at Britannia Center just before 4:00 pm ...
I reminded our walkers to always be prepared by bringing light jackets, hats, water and snacks to our Saturday excursions as we never know how long they will last ... anyone who has reached their limit at any point in the outing is welcome to return to Britannia or home ... no-one is obliged to stay with the group ...

Walking club report
Walking Club Sat Aug 03'08
Flora, Linda, Maria, Rosa, Jose and Virginia met at the Seniors Centre and charted our separate routes to our destination: Rosa and Jose took the Skytrain to the Science Centre at False Creek to wait for our arrival ... the rest of us walked in a zig-zag route to avoid traffic and to enjoy the shade offered by residential trees ...
En route to Science World, we passed Quest Food Exchange at 1217 East Georgia (near Vernon) ... curiosity led us inside where we found a well-stocked store of grocery items ... volunteer cashiers told us the store is operated by Quest Society ... this organization provides groceries at greatly reduced (30% of retail) prices to customers who are receiving welfare benefits or have been referred by a social agency ... a referred card system is maintained for each customer ...
One customer interjected to say that he was very impressed with the variety and quality of food items: fresh fruits and vegetables, frozen meats, dairy, as well as a wide selection of packaged items from pasta to cereals and cookies, crackers, coffee, tea, juice and soft drinks, rice, sauces, spices, canned fruits and vegetables ... unfortunately the cashiers had no business cards or printed information for us to post at Britannia Centre ... they provided us with their phone number and suggested we call during the week when the office staff were available ...
http://www.questoutreach.org/page149.htm for more info.
Our walking members met Rosa and Jose at Science World and after a brief rest, we continued our walk along the north shore of False Creek to Edgewater Casino ... there Linda, Jose and Rosa caught the casino shuttle to the stadium Skytrain station to return to Britannia ... Maria opted to return by foot while Flora continued partway with Virginia ...
Virginia continued on her own past beautiful gardens and parks along the seawall under some of the most stunning condo developments and shops in downtown Vancouver ... she rode the Aqua bus to Granville Island for a light lunch and browsed through the market taking in the music and sumptuous array of foods on display ... a refreshing ride on the harbor ferry took her back to Science World and the Main Street Skytrain to return home ...
All seniors are welcome to join our walking group ... for those who prefer a leisurely pace and short destination, you will have companions ... seniors who like a brisker pace and longer walks will find like-minded walkers to keep you company ... rest stops are made when needed ...
Some of our walks start with a bus or Skytrain ride to get us to parks and along waterways where the air and the views are refreshing ... so it's a good idea to bring some change for the fare as well as a hat, water and maybe a light snack ... we meet at 11:00 am at Britannia Seniors Centre on Commercial Drive and Napier behind Sweet Cherubim health food store.

Life's Lessons
A prospector walks his tired old mule into a western Town one day. He'd been out in the desert for about six months without a drop of whiskey.
He walked up to the first saloon he came to and tied his Old mule to the hitch rail. As he stood there brushing Some of the dust from his face and clothes, a young Gunslinger walked out of the saloon with a gun in one Hand and a bottle of whiskey in the other.
The young gunslinger looked at the old man and laughed, Saying, 'Hey old man, have you ever danced?'
The old man looked up at the gunslinger and said, 'No, I never did dance. I just never wanted to.'
A crowd had gathered by then and the gunslinger said, 'Well, you old fool, you're gonna' dance now,' and Started shooting at the old man's feet. The old prospector Was hopping around and everybody was laughing. When the gunslinger fired his last bullet, he holstered His gun and turned around to go back into the saloon.
The old man reached up on the mule, drew his shotgun, And pulled both hammers back making a double clicking Sound.
The gunslinger heard the sound and everything Got quiet. The crowd watched as the gunslinger slowly Turned around looking down both barrels of the shotgun.
The old man asked, 'Did you ever kiss a mule's ass?'
The gunslinger swallowed hard and said, 'No. But I've always wanted to.'
The lessons from this story are:
1. Don't waste ammunition.
2. Don't mess with old people.
