Hello Brit Volunteers!
If you haven't had a chance to drop by Britannia recently, please do so this weekend!
Artful Sundays takes place every Sunday between Aug 7-Sept 4 from 12pm-5pm and there are many artists featured on the weekend!

This Sunday, Aug 14, don’t' forget to catch the Knitting/Crochet Special where you can observe the intricate, delicate and amazing pieces literally developed before your eyes!
There'll be live music with Katheryn Petersen and Rio Samaya and also a first-ever, Knit Crochet Café run by your very own Britannia Volunteer Program!

That's right! Freshly baked food, freshly brewed Ethical Bean Coffee, and freshly made tea just like the way a sunny Sunday ought to be spent! :) All proceeds for the café go to the Volunteer Program.
This event relies on your participation! Come on down and check out the event and café or if you can spare some time, volunteer with us!
Volunteers are wanted to assist at the café, setting up, selling and serving coffee/tea, and striking, between 11:30-2:30pm or from 3pm-6pm. Needless to say, there'll be yum yums for volunteers!
If you're available and enthusiastic about this opportunity to get busy this Sunday, meet people, and share the sunshine with big smiles, then let us know!

July Bake Sale

Hi,
Our July Bake and Sell takes place this week!
If you like to bake, learn some new awesome recipes and have a short tea break with some fun, fun, people… let me know!
Bake takes place on Friday July 15, 3-5pm at the Al Mattison Lounge Kitchen
Sale takes place on Saturday 16, 9am-12pm at the Britannia Secondary Parking Lot.
Volunteers are wanted to assist with baking and selling. Yum yums to be had! Sign up quick so we know how many to expect!
If you have recipe you'd like to try, let us know! If you are able to bring some baking supplies for Friday, that'd be great too! We are looking for measuring cups for liquids and try items, mixing bowls, and some wooden spoons. :)

Tis that time of month again and we're looking to see if you'd like to bake and help us sell!

If you're interested in baking, please let us know by July 11.
Our bake sessions are designed to be fun, informative, and creative!~ If you haven't baked before or just want to spend some time out of the house, come on and join the Friday afternoon friendly bunch who pick recipes and bake between 3-5pm each 3rd Friday. Volunteers who bake gather around for tea and to try out their luscious baked goods!
These yummy goodies are then nicely wrapped and sold on the 3rd Saturday of each month.
Our bake leader, Jenny sorts out recipes and facilitates the kitchen crew and volunteer leader, Limei ensures that our yummies are sold at the 3rd Saturday Beyond the Blue Box Recycling program at Britannia's Parking lot.

JUNE 5, SUNDAY
VOLUNTEER SHIFTS: 10am-2pm or 1:30-5:30pm.
TASKS: Setting up and taking down feast equipment, tables and chairs etc. Serving food and replenishing food. Meeting and greeting the public and registering people who come to support arts initiatives.
REQUIREMENTS: Outgoing, friendly personality, confident connecting with public in the English language
BENEFITS: Support your local community and arts initiatives, engage in grassroots planning and opportunities, meet artists and community and join in our FEAST!
Statement of hours provided if requested at end of shift.

The EAST FEAST is a community meal that raises funds through ticket sales to the event which in turn directly funds an artist or artist group. The decision on the distribution of funds is given to the community through a democratic voting process. This FEAST is grassroots micro-funding at its best, relying on community engagement to be successful.
Community members will be invited to participate by attending a meal in support of local artists.
The inaugural FEAST is scheduled for Sunday June 5th and will have an “afternoon tea” theme. Those who attend will enjoy food specifically created and prepared for the event by artist-chef Michael Speier of Open Sesame Thematic Catering, entertainment and the opportunity to meet and listen to three artists who will each make a 5-7 minute presentation during the event. At the end of the FEAST meal the attendees will vote on which artist they would like to see funded. The chosen artist will receive a grant from the funds raised by the event ticket sales of up to $1000.
The EAST FEAST is a granting process targeting artists who may not be eligible for the formal methods of corporate or government funding. The application process has been made purposely simple, easily accessible and open for the artist to imagine the possibilities. This process gives the artist an unrestricted resource of funds to realize an artistic goal. The artist chosen at the FEAST to receive funding will be expected to present at the next FEAST through an oral or visual display/demonstration describing to the attendees the impact the FEAST funding had on their project.

Bake, bake, bake…then eat!
Yes, come join us as we bake some of our favourite recipes (you can use your own!) to sell at the monthly Beyond the Blue Box Recycling program at Brit's Secondary School every 3rd Saturday. If you're interested, please email me your name and let me know who's coming and if you have a recipe to share! After baking, we wrap up with an afternoon TEA… someone's got to try the cookies, right? :)

Bake Sale! Now we've baked them, we gotta sell them! This takes place on the 3rd Sat of every month until the Fall. Volunteers help set up the tent, chairs, table, make coffee and sell our lovely baked goods to the hungry people who come to recycle their items! Volunteers for this position need to register ahead of time with me in order to be able to do this shift. We're looking for outgoing, friendly people, with the can-do attitude! All proceeds go to the Volunteer Program.

RIMS COMMUNITY DAY
You've likely seen it while walking your dog or playing on the soccer field at the Britannia Oval. It's time to give our skyline mural a new face-lift! If you like being part of something BIG, love registering and organizing food and people (we're expecting 160 people!) and support our local soccer program (micro footie), this is the event for you… and our friends and family! Only 16 coveted spots available and they're starting to fill up quickly. Sign up quick if you want to be part of the action! Refreshments and lunch provided.

Stone Soup Festival
This is the place to be in May! Even people in Europe have heard about our ever popular community festival featuring musicians, artists, and local vendors and food. Come explore our mini Farmer's market, free workshops on food and button-making, and surround yourself with COMMERCIAL DRIVE and SOUP of course! Refreshments provided throughout the day. Shifts are almost all filled. Sign up quick if you're still interested! Orientation is on May 5, at 4:30pm at the Learning Resource Centre, behind the library.
May 20/21 - Bake and Tea!
Yup, it's the 3rd Friday and Saturday of May, so we bake again on the Friday and sell the next day. Volunteers are always welcome but please sign up early so we know how many will be there! Friday 3:30-5:30 and Saturday 8:45am-12:15pm.

Hello!
This is a posting for a special opportunity to get involved and BUSY for one day in May… well, technically two days since some of you have already signed up for Stone Soup! Woohoo!
On May 1st, Sunday, join 100 people as we give the Britannia Oval a new facelift! Think Extreme Oval Makeover!
From 9am-3pm, 100 people will be on-site to repaint the mural facing the Britannia Oval AND create a new mural for our soccer container right outside the Britannia Secondary Cafeteria! But hang on folks, that's not all! We're also going to be building benches and painting them… woo hoo!
70 volunteers from Risk Insurance Management Society (RIMS) will be there to give back to the community by providing the paint and labour, but they'll need help in getting organized and that's where you come in!
We're looking for 16 active, enthusiastic, outgoing and friendly volunteers with the can-do attitude! You'll be helping with set-up, operations, registration, food service, clean-up and more!
If any of this sounds like, "YEAH! This is so me!", please let me know.
Shifts are 8am-1pm or 11am-4pm. We have limited spots, so sign up quick before we open this up to the larger community!
(Light refreshments and lunch provided. Statements of hours too if requested at the end of your shift!)

It's bike time!~

Yup, time to drag those bikes out from behind the clutter, out from the dust and dirt and time to start ridin'! Ok, if you've been riding all season long, excellent! :)
Our 2nd series of workshops "Workshops for Volunteers by Volunteers" starts this April!
You voted and we provided! Our first bicycle maintenance workshop takes place on:
APRIL 10, SUNDAY from 1-3pm at Britannia, Rink Mezzanine Room
Registration Deadline: April 8, 2011 4pm
 or first 10 registrants, whichever comes first! :)

Topics covered will include:
Overall inspection
Safety & security
Wheels and tires
Fit and comfort
Brakes
Steering
Chain and gears
Please bring your own bicycles to work on as this will be a good learning and fixing opportunity for you to get your bicycles in shape and ready for the road!
Minor adjustments and repairs will be conducted. Bicycle replacement parts and supplies can be purchased from our instructor (bicycle guru and mechanic, Erik, from VanCycle Mobile Bicycle Shop) on-site so please bring your money! :)
Please note that because this workshop only has spots open for 10 individuals and 10 bicycles, we will take the first 10 people who respond by email with:

The workshop is FREE for active BRIT VOLUNTEERS and a minimal fee of $10/person* will be charged for anyone who wants to come (accompanied by a Brit volunteer) who would like to attend the workshop. E.g. Brit volunteer's friend or family member. These workshops can generally run from $50-80 per session, so grab this amazing learning opportunity while you can!

Recycling assistants
Do you thrive on sustainable living practices? Do you love to inspire recycling and reduction of materials? This is the position for you!
Once a month, our Green Team runs Beyond the Blue Box, a recycling program which allows community folks to recycle many plastics and items not accepted by the city. We could use your help to make this happen!
Assist our program by sorting and separating recyclables, moving bags of recyclables, handling payment, and general operations (including set-up/strike). You must be able to be mobile for 2-3 hours, have some manual dexterity and be comfortable working in the outdoors.
This is a once-a-month commitment on Saturday mornings from 9:30am-12:30pm. Training is provided by an experienced volunteer.

LUNCH PROGRAM - Cook and Cook's Assistants
The Al Mattison Lounge Seniors' Lunch Program takles place on Thursday afternoons. It's a very popular program which provides social and interactive opportunities while emphasizing healthy meals in and affordable way. It takes place at 12pm and volunteer cooks and assistants need to be available from 10am-2pm. If you like doing grocery shopping, doing food prep, cooking, or serving food… these are the positions for you! Come on down and meet some fine people over yummy food and fun.

Don't forget that this position qualifies for the Courtesy Pass which entitles volunteers to unlimited use of the Fitness Centre, Pool and Rink for up to 6 months!

55+ Centre Drop-In Hosts
You know how spaces seem so lonely and uninviting when no one's there to greet you? Well, guess what? If you like saying HELLO! WELCOME… and making new friends, this position is for you~

Our AML 55+ Centre is open 7 days a week for drop-in sessions and we're looking for that smiley, friendly greeter who will make that warm difference to users.

On Saturdays from 11am-3pm, it's coffee-time… so duties would include preparing coffee, greeting new people, and tidying up the centre where necessary.

This position also qualifies for the Courtesy Pass and unlimited access to the Fitness Centre, Pool and Rink.

BAKE/SALE
Yahoo! It's time to bake, sniff, and consume freshly baked goodies again!~ My favourite time of the month! October will mark our 3rd bake and sale at Beyond the Blue Box.

We're looking for bakers, sniffers (yes, you'll get to get a whiff of the stuff you bake!), sellers and biters… well of course you get to eat some of what you bake! :)

Volunteer to help build a new playground for Britannia Elementary School!
Build date: Saturday, September 11, 2010
Time: 8 am to 4 pm - Rain or shine!
Location: Playground site below Britannia Elementary
Join us as we team up with Foresters, a not-for-profit life insurance provider, and KaBOOM! to build a new adventure playground for Britannia Elementary students and other neighbourhood kids.

We are seeking 150 volunteers. No special skills required - we will have a job for everyone. All volunteers must be at least 18 years old and must pre-register by providing the information below.

There’s nothing like freshly baked muffins and lemon loaves or banana bread sitting on a counter, just waiting to be eaten

Britannia’s Volunteer Program would like to invite YOU to come down, have some fun and bake with us. Yes, we’re looking for bakers and concession sellers. You can do either, or both! No professional experience necessary.
Baked items will be sold on the first day of Artful Sundays, August 8. We hope you’ll be part of this venture, to engage with other volunteers in a fun-filled activity and help raise some funds for our Volunteer Program.
Baking can take place on Saturday Aug 7 or Aug 8. Items will be wrapped and ready to sell on Aug 8 between 12-5pm. All baking must take place at Britannia, with the supervision of a staff/volunteer with Food Safe Certification.
If you’d like to be involved, in the planning and organizing, baking or sales aspect please let me know. We’d love to have you be part of this fun activity!

Hello!
Now, more than ever, people are aware of the issues of food security, the benefits of sharing resources, and eating ‘local’. Stone Soup celebrates the global diversity of food, the environment and its importance to the ‘culture’ of our community.

In the spirit of celebrating our global food community, Stone Soup will feature food vendors, artists, musicians, and presentations. Last year, we launched a new partnership with the Multicultural Family Centre in bringing the Fiesta de las Madres (Mothers Day Festival) to Stone Soup in celebration of the food and cultural traditions of Latin America.

This year, we’ve added a new segment to our festival – the Stone Soup Film Festival!
Last year’s festival was a success and we hope to introduce more films that emphasize the positive efforts being made to change our current food system and empower this generation to take action. Some films include:
“Guerrilla Gardening: Can you dig it?”
“What’s on your plate?”
“A thousand suns”
“Dirt” and more…

Volunteer on MAY 8Th, Saturday, and you’ll get a chance to experience 3 festivals all rolled into one!

Last year almost 30 volunteers helped to make our community event a success!
This year, you can make a difference too! Come join our volunteer family of over 60 individuals and be a special part of this festival!

December 14, Monday 3-5pm

Youth Mentorship Carving Project

Blessing Event Videographer

Aaron Nelson Moody was engaged by Britannia to work in collaboration with local youth to design and execute First Nations themed house posts and ridge beam entrance way for the Britannia Ice Arena. This entranceway is now completed and installed on its permanent home attached to the Britannia Arena. Witnesses are invited to this blessing event to participate in a ceremony which will include singing, drumming, blessing of the posts and beam either through smudging or perhaps water and cedar boughs. Witnesses at this event are there to remember the event and to pass it on as validators of the event.



A volunteer videographer is wanted to record the entire ceremony on a digital video camera so that we can archive this event and present it to members of the community on Dec 16! Volunteer should have an eye for composition or set-up so you know what to record and how and must be comfortable using digital video equipment. Access to your own equipment is an asset, but not necessary. Refreshments available. Entire ceremony is expected to take about 1 hour.

Pre-School Winter Party Assistants

It’s the end of year party for the Pre-School at Britannia and pre-school families are invited to come celebrate! Volunteers are wanted to help make this event happen – main activities are setting up, making coffee etc, and taking down of the event

Winter Solstice Lantern Festival Operatives

It’s that wonderful time of year when we celebrate the longest night of the year and a return to light! Come join other community residents to celebrate this One Festival in Five Neighbourhoods!

Volunteers wanted in various areas

– Dec 20 is set-up day when we build the labyrinth of light (600 over candles used!) and prepare the performance rooms

- Dec 21 is the day of the event: Performance Hosts, hot chocolate sellers and labyrinth guides needed

Britannia Aquaponic Project Assistant Coordinator (BAPAC)

A volunteer is wanted to help with the sourcing of material and building of a self-contained food producing system utilizing fish to produce fertilizer for plant food! (how cool is that? :P) Volunteer will report to the Project Coordinator with the Grandview Woodland Food Connection & work closely with Britannia students to help monitor and maintain the system during this time period. Experience and interest with public education and outreach (creation of press releases, posters etc.) are assets but not necessary. The ideal candidate would be resourceful in finding materials, have a keen interest in sustainability and sciences (biology, agriculture, etc.), have some knowledge of fish and gardening and access to a vehicle for transporting materials. The volunteer will gain some training on this amazing system and build your knowledge of aquaponics! There are also opportunities for potential spin-off projects after the successful completion of this in March. Bus tickets and/or gas will be reimbursed for transportation incurred.

Labyrinth Build-- Find out how we construct the 700-candle labyrinth and the history behind it! Transform Gym D into a whole new space! 10am-4pm

"Solstice Operatives" Wanted!
In The House Workshops/Performance Hosts - 3pm-6:45pm (positions take place in houses off-site, must be able to help set-up tables and chairs)
Labyrinth Guide - 5pm-8:30pm or 8pm-11:00pm (striking required)
Performance Host - 5:30pm-9:30pm (setting up and striking performance spaces and welcoming guests into spaces)
Hot Chocolate Guru - 4:00pm - 8:00pm or 7:30pm-10:30pm (must be comfortable handling hot liquids, selling cookies, handling cash etc.)
Hospitality Specialist - 4pm-8pm or 7:30pm-11pm (welcome volunteers and performers to green rooms and maintain a hospitable environment for guests during the evening!)

The times are all very specific, so please make your selection carefully! Email me with your choice of position and shift. Please note that the positions are all very popular, so don't wait until the last minute to sign-up, do it now! Make it a fun-filled family event or volunteer with friends!

Community events and programs are only as successful as the word that gets out that they're there! We want volunteers to help us spread the word about these amazing programs! You know, the ones you've attended and wondered why numbers seem small? Well, it's because no one knows! So… help us out and enjoy the good weather at the same time (while it lasts!).
Poster Kings and Queens wanted any day this week and next to put up posters along Commercial Drive… Tape and posters provided, enthusiasm and creativity encouraged! :)

KITCHEN AID
Inspired by world wonders like Jamie Oliver, Bobby Flay, Cat Cora, Rachel Ray, Martin Yan, etc.? Well, here's your chance to help whip up a meal for happy faces - children at our on-site childcare centres! Volunteer kitchen aids are wanted to help our Chef Shirldene concoct some yummy meals and snacks for children at the centres because children appreciate good food ON-TIME too!
Times to help? Tues-Thurs 9:30am-12:30pm. You can pick a day or two to volunteer each week. Volunteers are interested in making things happen, are punctual and able to work well with little supervision. Volunteers should be able to take directions well and will need to consent to a criminal record check and will engage in food prep, kitchen prep activities and learn hands-on from our professionally-trained Chef!

STONE SOUP FILM FESTIVAL OPERATIVES (SSFFO) Vancouver is well known for its list of world famous film festivals… So, if you've been feasting off the VIFF, don't hold back now!
Come make history by participating in our FIRST annual Stone Soup Film Festival: Exploring the Politics of Food. The festival will screen a wide range of films that emphasize the positive efforts being made to change our current food system and empower this generation to take action. Selections include: The Garden, the Academy-nominated feature about the fight to save a beloved urban farm in South Central L.A; Mad City Chickens, a doc about chickens and the urbanites who love them; All Jacked Up, a poignant portrait of four teens struggling with sugar addiction; Food Inc, an expose on the shocking truth about our food system, and many more!
SSFFOs are wanted to assist with ushering, ticket-selling, collecting donations and more! Volunteers are outgoing, friendly folks, who like meeting new people and welcoming them to this soon-to-be-popular film festival! Shifts take place on Sat and Sun, Oct 17 (10am-2pm; 1:30-4:30pm; 4-8pm; 7:30-10:45pm) and Oct 18 ( 10am-1:30pm; 1-4pm; 3-7pm; 6:00-10:30pm)
SSFFOs will get refreshments during your shifts and for those that volunteer one shift - free access to that same day's films!Volunteering 2 shifts or more gets you a FREE access pass to ALL films, the entire weekend!

HAUNTED HOUSE THEATRICAL COORDINATOR and ACTORS They say Hitchcock is a legend because of his incredible ability to keep mystery and suspense alive… even now! Would you like to take on this challenge too?
Help transform the Teen Centre into our neighbourhood HAUNTED HOUSE this Halloween! A Theatrical Coordinator is wanted to work with staff and actors (teens) to create an experience that is "scary" enough to be memorable! Knowledge of acting, costumes and working with youth is helpful. Coordinator wanted to assist with planning and developing script/characters throughout October. Meetings are flexible and will coincide with actors. Must be available Oct 31 from 9am-5pm. Refreshments and meals available on Oct 31. Gain acting, directing, coordinating skills with eager actors!
Actors are wanted to play some scary roles in this house! If you like to work with others, to create this scary, festive, atmosphere, do let us know! Special Event Assistant - Eastside Family Place 30th Birthday Celebration (Sept. 19)

If you like interacting with children and families, meeting new people, having fun and throwing parties, this is the position for you!
Volunteers are wanted to assist with event set-up, decorations, coordination, hosting activities/games, arts & crafts, information and and general event management. The Eastside Family Place is a support and resource centre for famlies with small children and is located by Britannia's Community Centre.
Volunteers must:
Be mature and reliable
Enjoy interacting with children and families
Be outgoing, and able to take directions
Be able to commit to at least one 4-hour shift on Sept 19 (shifts range throughout the day from 9am-5pm)
An orientation/training will be provided on the day of the event. Opportunities include pre-event decorations or on-site. Lunch, drinks, and snacks will be provided on the day of the event.
