A newcomer, Stephanie, came into the centre to ask about the walking club ... she couldn't join us yesterday as she had an early afternoon appointment but is interested in future walks ...:
Flora, Rosa, Jose, Linda and Virginia waited until 11:30 to see if any other walkers would arrive and to decide what our destination would be ... originally, we planned to walk past Chinatown to Keefer Park but because the day was already hot, we chose instead to take the Skytrain to Waterfront Station where we hopped the Seabus to Lonsdale Quay in North Vancouver ...
In a short walk around the park at Lonsdale Quay we came across a memorial to the men and women of the marine shipping industry and armed services, with pictures of a number of ships that were in use during the 1900's ... a short distance away was a pavilion erected by the City of North Vancouver commemorating the citizens and businesses that contributed to the completion of the north shore section of the Canada Trail ... adorning the front posts of the pavilion were two five foot tall totems called K'ay'achtn's (greeting figures) ... these were presented by Darren Yelton, a totem carver of the Squamish Nation ...
We continued on to the Quay where we sat in the shade of the large outdoor plaza for a light lunch and coffee ... a karaoke stage was set up a the end of the plaza where local singers entertained us ... one man sang Broadway tunes in a beautiful baritone voice ... his performance was received with cheers and clapping by the crowd ...
While we enjoyed the cool breezes off the water, we discussed an alternative walking option ... some of our group prefer short leisurely walks ending with a social gathering at the seniors centre or a cafe ... other members prefer longer more challenging walks covering greater distances ... a suggestion was made that the long distance walkers head out a half hour before the easy walkers and we all meet at a specific time and place to relax and enjoy a light lunch or beverage ... the suggestion was well received ...
Another suggestion was that, during very warm weather such as we are enjoying in July, we start our walks at 9:30 am as the day is too hot to be out between 11:00 am and 2:00 pm ...
Virginia will speak with Ann's vacation replacement on Monday to arrange for club members to be notified of the change in start time to 9:30 am ...
